The fight you keep having isn't about the dishes
Most recurring arguments are about connection, not chores. How to spot the pattern underneath.

Couples often tell me they fight about small things: dishes, plans, screen time. Then they are surprised by how big those fights feel.
The pattern under the topic
Recurring conflict usually follows a cycle. One partner reaches for connection, sometimes through criticism. The other protects themselves, sometimes by withdrawing. Both end up feeling alone.
Interrupting the cycle
Try naming the cycle together when things are calm. “This is the thing where I push and you go quiet” is far easier to work with than another round about the dishes.
In couples therapy, we slow this cycle down so each person can say what they actually need, and hear it.
